Position Summary:
The Advisor works at AMIDEAST in the EducationUSA Library, providing information to the public about U.S. higher education at accredited undergraduate, graduate, professional or other institutions in the U.S. The advisor offers public sessions on the admissions process, financial aid, intercultural issues, logistics and other topics as required and appropriate, and provides one-on-one advising sessions. The Advisor manages the day-to-day activities of the Competitive College Club. EducationUSA is administered at AMIDEAST under a grant from the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to promote higher education and study opportunities in the United States.
Responsibilities:
Advise individuals seeking guidance and information on studying in the U.S.
Manage monthly advising calendar and maintain social media presence (with oversight of Advising Coordinator)
Conduct group orientation sessions at AMIDEAST and at other locations for the public, and conduct individual consultations.
Coordinate speakers, produce materials, update presentation information, and promote the annual pre-departure orientations that are held for students preparing to travel to the U.S.
Maintain the library of the EducationUSA resource center at AMIDEAST with up-to-date materials, books, and promotional brochures as well as computer/internet access for students to do online research.
Plan outreach visits to public and private high schools to promote U.S. higher education, Opportunity Grants and the Competitive College Club.
Support and contribute to events for the annual International Education Week
Coordinate with U.S. university representatives and local schools to help representatives recruit students from Egypt and assist them in the set-up of appointments at local high schools.
Represent the EducationUSA network and AMIDEAST as needed at conferences and workshops.
Support the Advising Coordinator in the recruitment, identification, and selection of eligible Opportunity Grant students, and assist in advising them as they apply to U.S. institutions
Under the supervision of the Advising Coordinator, manage the day-to-day implementation of the Competitive College Club (CCC), an initiative to assist students in developing key critical thinking skills, prepare for SAT and TOEFL, engage with the community, research university options, complete applications and apply for scholarships and other financial support.
Coordinate volunteer guest speakers to help with the CCC and other advising events at AMIDEAST
Run weekly and bi-weekly meetings with CCC members, and present in-depth advising on all admissions topics, including: personal statements, recommendation letters, choosing schools, applications orientation, financial aid and scholarships, etc., as well as providing one-on-one support.
Maintain student files for each CCC student.
Compile monthly reports and statistics for review and submission by the Advising Coordinator.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
At least 3 years of work experience
Knowledge of the U.S. higher education system
Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Native or near-native written and oral English skills
Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities
Availability to travel domestically and internationally
Preferred:
A working knowledge of Arabic
Degree from a U.S. or Canadian University
Experience in both Egyptian and U.S. education and exchange activities
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
Computer literacy in MS Office
