Description 1) Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards. 2) Compute taxes owed and prepare tax returns, ensuring compliance with payment, reporting and other tax requirements. 3) Analyze business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations, to project future revenues and expenses or to provide advice. 4) Report to management regarding the finances of establishment. 5) Establish tables of accounts, and assign entries to proper accounts. 6) Develop, maintain, and analyze budgets, preparing periodic reports that compare budgeted costs to actual costs.
Qualifications Education A four-year degree is required for most accounting jobs. Qualified applicants generally have earned a bachelor of science in accounting or a related field such as business or economics. Those with a two-year associates degree can enter a similar career such as bookkeeping. Abilities To become a successful accountant, first and foremost you must be good with numbers. Numbers are the basis of any career in accounting. Some accountants minor in mathematics as further preparation during college. It is also important for qualified accountants to have strong analytical skills. Small discrepancies can often become compounded if an individual does not pay close attention to minor details. For this reason, being detail oriented is another important attribute for those looking to pursue a career in accounting.
