Background Information/Organization Context
Egypt is a signatory to the 1951 Convention and its 1967 Protocol, and the 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa. Pursuant to a 1954 memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Government of Egypt and UNHCR, the UNHCR Office in Egypt continues to conduct Refugee Status Determination (RSD) under its mandate in the absence of national asylum procedures. Egypt hosts more than 280,000 refugees and asylum seekers from multiple nationalities. In line with UNHCR’s RSD strategic direction, the Office takes into consideration the role RSD plays in a broader protection environment and carries out RSD to achieve maximum protection dividends for the largest number of persons we serve—based on capacity, while ensuring integrity of the system, including by strict adherence to UNHCR's RSD Procedural Guidelines. One of the RSD Unit’s objectives is also to contribute to the Office’s objective to engage in ongoing dialogue with the Egyptian Government on the development of a national asylum framework.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will be part of the RSD Unit, under the overall supervision of the Senior RSD Officer and direct supervision of the Associate RSD Officer.
Primary scope of assignment:
· Conduct legal and country of origin information research in English and Arabic and create and maintain a repository as needed;
· Draft papers/reports in English as assigned by supervisors;
· Translate documents related to policies, guidance and procedures of UNHCR as well as other working documents from English to Arabic and vice-versa;
· Generally, support RSD Unit as needed in carrying out functions, including with regards coordination as well as Merged Registration and RSD;
· Perform any other tasks as assigned by supervisor, including supporting other protection units as requested.
Minimum qualification required:
· University degree in law, political science, or any related field (recent graduate or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO).
· Completion of at least two years of undergraduate studies in relevant field.
· Sound knowledge of refugee, human rights and international humanitarian laws are desirable.
· Sound researching skills are desirable.
· Previous experience in humanitarian work is desirable.
· Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic (reading and writing). Knowledge of other UN language desirable.
Eligibility
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
· Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within two years of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
· Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
