Description Providing food and water for animals and organizing special diets if needed. Carrying out regular observations and health checks. Making sure that animals are clean, comfortable and behaving normally. Keeping up high levels of hygiene in the whole facility and for each animal. Secure appropriate animal housing conditions by regular monitoring of heating, lighting and humidity. Monitoring the weight and growth of animals. Maintaining high standards of cleanliness throughout the animal facility. Help in behavioral testing under direct consultation with interested researchers. Keeping accurate records and computerized inventory system to monitor each individual animal in the facility. Involved in setting up scientific studies, breeding animals and maintaining colonies in coordination with interested researchers. Perform different types of surgeries, ensures that all equipment and instruments are at hand, operable and sanitized; may induce and/or monitor anesthesia, and to follow strict legal controls to make sure that animals used in research are well looked after and humanely treated. Performs euthanasia of animals in accordance with established laws and departmental policy by injecting animals with controlled substances or using induction chamber for gas euthanasia; may administer Schedule 2 barbiturates and/or narcotics. Treat animals with drugs by different routes of administration (oral gavage, tail vien, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous).Train and mentor other animal technicians.
Qualifications 5 years experience working with a variety of small animals mice, rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs in an animal shelter, Veterinary Hospital Facility or research laboratory facilities. High school degree. The position requires ability to lift or pull in excess of 20 kgs, must not be allergic to animal hair, food, or related dust, or have sensitivity to organic chemicals.
