The British Embassy, Cairo has vacancy for a Media and Public Affairs Officer.
Main Purpose of the Job:
This is an excellent opportunity for an innovative, ambitious and highly-motivated individual to play a key role in the Embassy’s high-profile public diplomacy and media work.  Reporting to the Head of Communications, and working closely with HMA and Embassy teams, the ideal candidate will implement the Press and Public Affairs strategy through delivery of proactive media activities: acting as a press advisor to HMA and wider Embassy, running media campaigns, placing content with press and liaising closely with local journalists, delivery press monitoring and evaluation to help streamline Embassy communications.
Due to the changing environment in Egypt, the job holder will need to be flexible and support the operations of the Press Team and Embassy as a whole. Responsibilities may therefore change and evolve depending on business needs.
Duties and Responsibilities (What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?):
Implement the Press and Public Affairs strategy through media activities:  Arrange press coverage and placement of appropriate press releases, statements, and op-eds in local and national press, and respond to media requests and questions. Organise interviews, roundtables, and conferences as appropriate to forward different messaging, and proactively brief journalists to ensure maximum reach and clarify of Embassy and HMG messaging. Lead on creating and delivering innovative media strategies that support HMA activities to maintain effectiveness and reach, cover VIP visits, and media manage at events.  Give clear briefings to HMA and senior colleagues in London and Dubai on preparing for media appearances eg. Advise on language, tone, delivery, and provide background of the interviewer/channel.
Provide daily press summaries including media landscape monitoring and analysis, flagging headlines and trends and highlighting opportunities and risks. Monitor TV, online news, print media and radio and proactively indentify media developments throughout the day. Provide analysis and ‘lessons learnt’ on specific policy issues and pieces of Embassy work, and provide the media angle (reactions, coverage etc) when requested for Embassy teams.
Maintain good relationships with all main media outlets in Egypt and develop a regional and pan-Arab network in order to increase Embassy reach. Provide advice to different Embassy teams on varieties of coverage available, opportunities for media and how incorporating press coverage into their work will help achieve objectives.
Additional tasks as required, including swift and accurate translation, covering for Digital Diplomacy Officer, including running the Embassy social media channels (creating content such as videos/graphics/photo editing), and supporting at events. Provide communications support during crises, including acting as Field Press Officer.

  • Fluency in Arabic and English (written and spoken)
  • Wide network of press contacts.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including ability to work quickly, accurately and flexibly in a customer-focused environment
  • Good knowledge of Egyptian media landscape and how to maximise reach and influence on it

The position is B3 (L) and the monthly Gross Salary is LE 11,933 subject to insurance and tax as per the usual regulations based on a 36 hours per week.
